The Rolling Rock Song
by Dave Thayer

To the tune of  "Fox went out on a chilly night"

Rock rolled out on a chilly night
Waited for the moon to give him light
For he’d many a mile to roll that night
Before he'd reach the ocean, the ocean, the ocean
He’d many a mile to roll that night
Before he'd reach the ocean.

He rolled 'til he came to a mountain stream
Where the water was white and bubbling
And the fish and the ducks were all swimming
As the water flowed down to the ocean, the ocean, the ocean
The fish and the ducks were all swimming
As the water flowed down to the ocean.

Without a worry in the stream he hopped
And he rolled on the bottom where the rocks all plopped
The farther he rolled the smaller he got
As the other rocks made him rounder, rounder, rounder
The farther he rolled the smaller he got
As the other rocks ground him rounder.

He finally came to the ocean blue
Where the seals played and the sea gulls flew
And he stopped on the beach where he was lain
For now he was a sand grain, sand grain, sand grain
He rolled so far and he got so small
That now he was a sand grain.

Very soon more sand came and piled right up
He was happy to be buried with his friends on top
He was safe underground with everyone around
And they all got glued together, together, together
Bunches of sand grains glued up tight
And it made them into sandstone.

Well the sand got deeper and it never stopped
Mr. Rock was deep in the melting pot
It was sort of cozy and sort of hot
Deep underneath a volcano, volcano, volcano
It was sort of cozy and sort of hot
Deep underneath a volcano.

Oh I’d like to be back on the mountain top
Where it’s not so crowded and it’s not so hot
The good volcano thought a lot
And what do you think he did-o, did-o, did-o?
The good volcano thought a lot
And what do you think he did-o.

Volcano erupted with a mighty boom
Up in the air our rock did zoom
And he came back down by the light of the moon
With his friends all around together, together, together
And he came back down by the light of the moon
With his friends all around together.

This was a story of a big big rock
Who turned into sand after rolling a lot
Then he turned to lava when he got so hot
Now he sits on top of a mountain, a mountain, a mountain
He turned to lava when he got so hot
Now he’s up on top of the mountain.
